Grima appeared for the first time at ALEP II: He was a lot of fun to play.
This first photo was taken at Dragon*Con 2012, just after I finished applying my makeup. It was the first time I used an eyebrow makeup kit with wax to cover the brows. The transformation felt profound... And ugly! The effect shocked me, but in a good way: It meant success.
Here Grima is making the moves on his crush... He did that a lot.

Next thing we knew, Grima was In The Shire, where he enjoyed a pint, among other things. Don't mention the arrows, please!

There is a slight hiccup in the video clip, where about a second of sound and video is lost, but still, I'm glad for the recording!
This was rather spontaneous-- I decided I'd like to do it the night before, and asked my friend Jo, playing Eowyn, if she knew the lines and could send them on to me-- She knew them by heart and sent them to me in a text. I started working on memorizing them right away, and the next day practiced through them many times. When I was alone, things worked... But, with people the words didn't seem to want to settle. A few times I tried running through them with friends, Mel, Kate, Bonnie-- Sometimes I could do it, sometimes I stalled. But! Jo knew the lines and told me she could prompt me if I stalled on stage. Knowing this helped keep me grounded and gave me courage to go for it.
She only had to prompt me on one word, "clinging," and no one else knew it, except maybe Bonnie and Mel...
I know those lines really well now. I'd like to do the scene again with Rohan music in the background. Perhaps we will at AL3P III, scheduled for September 2014.
After ALEP II, Grima's next outing was Dragon*Con 2012.
By then I had time to get a better handle on uglifying myself for Grima. I used the Eyebrow Design Kit by Kryolan, pictured on the right. The kit is designed to hide and re-shape eyebrows, effectively covering brows with wax and then covering with makeup...
I also used the Skin Illustrator FX & Skin Tone alcohol-based makeup I used before to create the sick looking eyes, outline my veins blue, and generally make myself look very pale and unwell. The effect with the brows completed was startling, to say the least.

Captain Julien and Grima said goodnight after Friday Night Party at Bree.
For makeup I used Skin Illustrator, FX and Flesh Tone pallets. This is an alcohol-based makeup. I attempted to cover my eyebrows with soap and makeup, with not much success.
I was NOT about to shave them!
So, my Grima at ALEP II was a little too much on the attractive side.

Peter Jackson's visualization of The Lord of the Rings woke my latent passion for costuming and inspired me to learn to sew.

Nearly ten years ago I set out to teach myself to sew, so that I could create inspired costumes such as those featured on my site.
I created this site to share what I've done. It launched August 18, 2004, and has been growing ever-since.
In addition to costume construction pages, there are pages featuring portraits of the costumes being worn.
Costuming is a hobby I love documenting, but I do not do commissions, nor do I sell patterns.
