While constructing my Mirkwood Elf Gown, I went through my stash of fabrics, and found the perfect fabric for a Mirkwood Elf Drape or Shawl... Here are some photos of the fabric draped over my gown...

July 2, 2005:  The first question was what kind of cloak I would make... I was contemplating one like Legolas' Council Cloak, or Arwen's Bridge Shawl, or Galadriel's Prologue Cloak, or even Elrond's Gray cloak that he wears before the council, talking with Gandalf...  Decisions, decisions!

So, I came up with this version... what I consider a feminine Mirkwood version of the Elrond Gray...

First, some photos of the fabric as I cut it out...
I started with the Folkwear Moroccan Cloak pattern as far as the body of the cloak went, using  the pattern's largest sizing, to cut out what is nearly a half circle... but is longer through the shoulders... I drafted the caplets that I attached into the neckline, and used this same caplet shape to round the forward corners of the cloak...

Here, I have begun sewing the tight zig-zag stitch with the rolling hem foot, along the edges of the caplet, before sewing the caplets into the neckline...

Next, I did this tight zig-zag stitch with the rolling hem foot all along all of the edges of the cloak, and attached the two caplets to the neckline, overlapping like flower petals...

And then finally, I put in the harness to the cloak, designed to attach in front, partially hidden under the drape of the neckline on the Mirkwood Gown...

And now, with my Mirkwood Elf Gown... Some photos taken in the Evening...
Here are a few photos taken indoors...
And some shots of the cloak in morning light...
Here, I have the harness laying over the neck drape of the gown, so you can see it better... plus a close-up above, with the harness laying over some burgundy mircosuede fabric... Is there a possible battle dress in my future?...
I have more close-ups of the harness and the seven strand silver clasp on my Mirkwood Elf Cloak Pattern Page, towards the bottom... The harness is designed to tuck under the gown's neck drape, like it is here in the photo on the right...
Here are some photos of the cloak alone on the dress form...
So, the cloak is finished....  Still to do...  Get photos wearing it!  Thank you for visiting!
Fabric:  A burned out velvet sheer knit from Emmaonesock...
Silver Multi-Strand Clasp:  From Zuma Beach Beads Co...
The Gown:  Construction notes are on my Mirkwood Elf Gown Construction Page...
Happy Fourth, 2005!

Peter Jackson's visualization of The Lord of the Rings woke my latent passion for costuming and inspired me to learn to sew.

This page and its links reflect my best efforts in Lord of the Rings costuming.

Projects linking to their own pages are featured here. Click the links in the navigation bar to visit the individual pages, or scroll further below to the image links and see a quick overview of the costumes.

Mirkwood Elf Drape
Construction
An Inspired Project

Welcome to Yvette's
Nearly ten years ago I set out to teach myself to sew, so that I could create inspired costumes such as those featured on my site.

I created this site  to share what I've done. It launched August 18, 2004, and has been growing ever-since.

In addition to costume construction pages, there are pages featuring portraits of the costumes being worn.

Costuming is a hobby I love documenting, but I do not do commissions, nor do I sell patterns.

Please visit where your interests lead you, and enjoy.
