I've wanted to make this cloak from the first time I saw it... but... couldn't get past the intriguing hood...

I read up on it... Studied Photos... and thought about it now for over a year... When I was sure there was a center seam to the hood, I decided to try something...  And here is the beginning of my quest to make this cloak...
I started with the M shaped pattern found on the Requiem Cloak Page at Alleycatscratch.com here... and took it from there...
The cutting layout...
Adding the center seam allows me to cut the piece so that all the edges are at an angle to the grainline and selvage... The M that falls in the front when the hood is up is cut on true bias...   My mock is made on 60 inch width fabric... and cutting this way causes a lot of fabric to get lost at the edges... Very wasteful!  If I cut this out on 45 inch width fabric, the waste gets even worse, because only one panel of the hood would fit...
How it's sewn together...
Sew the center seam together...
One fold at the edge... and two tucks...
Then, I sewed the center seam together, and added one fold at the front followed by two tucks, one right after the other, at the middle of the M that falls on the forehead when the hood is up...

The fabric I used for the Mock is a stretch velvet I bought a while back...  before I discovered how bad it rolls when cut, and before I'd ever touched silk velvet... It doesn't drape as well as silk velvet, and is a bit thicker... but overall, I'm happy with how it came out...

Now, I will do at least two other versions of this cloak... One with the Aubergine Silk Velvet pictured to the right and on my Requiem Gown Construction Page... and one colored like the  original Gown Arwen wears in the movie... This one I will dye myself...

My third mock... I eliminated the round neckline, and added a point.  I liked this one best, although, there still needed to be some minor adjustments in length...  and as I trimmed and shaped, I wound up with Mock Four...  with curved edges, but basically very similar to the 3rd hood pattern...

Vision-Inspired Close-ups...
it's getting pretty late...  and I have the giggles...  So, I'll finish with the face provided by Lisa...
And... Later this morning,  (Feb. 25, 2005...) I'll pack it together... and head up to Omaha, for the LotR Symphony!  :)  That, and the late hour, explain the giggles.... !
This page documents my reconstruction of Arwen's Requiem Cloak, as seen in The Lord of the Rings, Return of the King... My recreation of Arwen's  Requiem Cloak started with a long process of figuring out how to make the hood...  I've documented this process below, along with some of he the pattern, showing my hood draft development...
Peter Jackson's visualization of The Lord of the Rings woke my latent passion for costuming and inspired me to learn to sew.

This page and its links reflect my best efforts in Lord of the Rings costuming.

Projects linking to their own pages are featured here. Click the links in the navigation bar to visit the individual pages, or scroll further below to the image links and see a quick overview of the costumes.

Arwen's Requiem Cloak
Construction

Welcome to Yvette's
Nearly ten years ago I set out to teach myself to sew, so that I could create inspired costumes such as those featured on my site.

I created this site  to share what I've done. It launched August 18, 2004, and has been growing ever-since.

In addition to costume construction pages, there are pages featuring portraits of the costumes being worn.

Costuming is a hobby I love documenting, but I do not do commissions, nor do I sell patterns.

Please visit where your interests lead you, and enjoy.
